Using the Engines/Voices TAB, you can select the voices you like, as well as edit their pitch and speed so that they sound better.

If you want to add more voices, visit the More Voices Page.

Click on individual voices and click the Test button to hear a sample of the voice.  If you like the voice, click enable.  If you don't want this one used, click Disable.  If you would like to change the pitch or speed of a voice, click the Edit button, and you'll be able to adjust them.  As you get more comfortable with listening to computer generated voices, you may want to speed up the reading in order to get information faster and shrink the size of the files.

The file options TAB let's you specify details about the files to create.  For portable use, you want to create MP3 files, so select MP3 for output format.  Some portable players can use .wav files, but these files are much bigger.

The Quality setting allows you to specify the quality of the MP3 file to create.  Some portable players may have minimum bitrates or sample rates, so check your portables documentation if you have trouble.  This setting is a bit of a tradeoff.  Lower numbers mean the MP3 file is smaller and you can get more audio on the portable, but the quality isn't quite as good.  Higer rates sound better, but the resulting larger file sizes mean you get less audio on the portable.  Start with 32kbp and 22Khz, and try experimenting from there to find what works best for you.
